WHAT DO YOU KNOW ABOUT THE BRITISH ISLES?

Under this title we are going to explain some question. Geographically there are two main island: IRELAND and BRITAIN. But politically we find two different States:

1) The REPUBLIC OF IRELAND or EIRE, whose capital is Dublin.

2) The UNITED KINGDOM OF GREAT BRITAIN AND NORTHEN IRELAND, which has four different countries:

- SCOTLAND, whose capital is Edinburgh.
- WALES, whose capital is Cardiff.
- ENGLAND, whose capital is London.
- NOTHERN IRELAND or ULSTER, whose capital is Belfast.

In England people speak English, of course.

In Scotland they speak English too, but a small minority speak Scottish Gaelic in northwest.

In Wales they also speak English. About 20% of the Welsh people can speak Welsh. All children learn English and Welsh at school.

In Ireland they speak English too, but Irish Gaelic is the native language of some people in the southwest and west. At school they all learn Gaelic as second language.
